OVERVIEW

Introducing the Joint Modernized Handheld (JMHH). This cutting-edge GPS device designed for the U.S. Space Force by Technology Advancement Group (TAG) with the support of Rocketship’s product experience design (PXD) approach. The initial contract included five leading development groups who competed the final contract for deployment into the field. After years of development, TAG was awarded the contract and greenlit to complete development for production.

You can find more information on TAG’s website here.

SERVICES PROVIDED

  • User Research
  • Product Experience Design
  • Prototyping
  • Preliminary Design for Manufacturing

DESIGN

The JMHH offers a new generation of technology that is intended to replace the previous Defense Advanced GPS Receiver (DAGR) device which most soldiers avoid using due to it’s dated design. The JMHH offers seamless navigation, even in GPS-denied environments. With its rugged design, dual battery compartments for uninterrupted power, and intuitive interface, the MGUE Handheld ensures reliability and efficiency in the field. The high-resolution display and innovative low-power auxiliary screen are both night-vision compatible, making it versatile for any mission.

IDEATION

The design of the JMHH was engineered with direct input from actively serving warfighters based on extensive user interviews and demonstrations in weeklong working sessions who provided critical input on use cases, forms, interface layouts, features, and functionality.

REFINEMENT

The JMHH was developed in close coordination with TAG and official stakeholders to address the various needs and objectives.

PROTOTYPING

Several rounds of presentation and partially functional prototypes were developed and assembled by the team for presentations to stakeholders and user demonstrations.

IMPACT

TAG was awarded with the final contract after proving to the technology and design exceeded the target offering. Built to the highest standards, this next-generation GPS device is set to redefine military navigation.
